Knee pain is a common joint problem that can reduce quality of life. It may be caused by injury, inflammation, joint disease, or musculoskeletal problems. Accurate diagnosis of the cause of the pain is essential to select the appropriate treatment.

Common causes of knee pain

  1. Injury and trauma: A bump, scrape, fracture, or damage to the internal tissues of the knee can cause pain.

  2. Inflammation and infection: Arthritis, patellar luxation (runner’s knee), and knee joint infection are common causes of pain.

  3. Joint diseases: Osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout (uric acid buildup) can cause chronic knee pain.

  4. Musculoskeletal problems: Shortness or weakness of muscles, cysts behind the knee, and problems with the surface of the bones also cause knee pain.

Ways to reduce knee pain

1. Rest

Getting enough rest for your knees helps speed up the tissue repair process and reduce joint pressure.

2. Use ice

Applying an ice pack to your knee for 15 to 20 minutes will reduce inflammation and pain. Be sure to place a cloth between the ice and your skin.

3. Bandage or knee brace

Using a knee brace can increase support and stability of the knee joint and reduce pain.

4. Strengthening and flexibility exercises

Specialized physical therapy exercises, such as strengthening the muscles around the knee and increasing joint flexibility, can help improve knee function. Be sure to consult a physical therapist before starting.

5. Medications

If needed, your doctor may prescribe nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or antibiotics to reduce pain and inflammation.

6. Physiotherapy

Physical therapy can help restore knee function using techniques such as massage, electrotherapy, specialized exercises, and manual therapies.

7. Laser therapy

Laser therapy is one of the modern methods of treating knee pain. This method:

  • Reduces inflammation of the joint and tissues around the knee

  • Relieves pain.

  • Accelerates the tissue repair process

  • It is very effective in cases of arthritis and chronic knee injuries.

Laser therapy is usually painless and side-effect-free and can be used in conjunction with physical therapy exercises and medications.

8. Lifestyle changes

Losing weight, wearing the right shoes, and managing daily activities can reduce pressure on the knees and reduce pain.

See a doctor

Accurately diagnosing the cause of knee pain is very important. Your doctor will determine the best treatment plan through a clinical examination and, if necessary, diagnostic tests, and may recommend a combination of treatments including medication, physical therapy, and laser therapy.
